Candace Rissley

Associate

Candace grew up in Victoria and completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria before earning her Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary in 2022.

During law school, she was an award-winning mooter (mock trial competitor) and an active volunteer with Pro Bono Students Canada and Student Legal Assistance, providing free legal representation to those in need. She also worked as a research assistant for the law faculty, focusing on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Candace began her legal career in criminal defence in Ontario, appearing daily in courts across the province, where she honed her litigation and advocacy skills. She particularly excelled at Charter challenges, resulting in the full withdrawal of charges for clients.

In 2024, she returned to Vancouver Island and shifted her focus to family law, driven by a desire to create a lasting positive impact in her clients’ lives.

She served as parents’ counsel in child protection cases involving the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). From the first call from a social worker, Candace guides parents and guardians through every step of the process.

Candace joined Velletta Pedersen Christie in early 2025, providing thoughtful, strategic, and empathetic representation throughout Victoria and surrounding communities. She understands that people seek legal guidance during some of the most challenging times in their lives and is committed to offering compassion and clarity. She creates a judgment-free space where clients feel heard while working together to find tailored solutions.

Her approach prioritizes family well-being in a calm, pragmatic manner. With a criminal law background, she navigates high-conflict disputes with grace and aplomb. She is a sharp strategist, known for her thorough preparation, creative problem-solving, and unwavering advocacy for her clients’ best interests.

Her current practice includes separation and divorce, parenting arrangements, support claims, protection matters, cohabitation or prenuptial agreements, and the division of family property and debt.

In her free time, Candace enjoys pop culture, crafting, and cozy nights in with her partner and their French bulldog.
