Permanent Resident Status

There are several categories under which you can apply to become a permanent resident of Canada. If you meet the requirements, you may apply for permanent resident status under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Provincial Nominee Program, Business Immigration Program or the Canadian Experience Class. Also, you may be sponsored to become a permanent resident of Canada by a family member who is a Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada.

Disclaimer

Permanent residents have most of the same rights as Canadians. As a permanent resident you can live, work or study anywhere in Canada. Permanent residents are eligible to obtain many of the social benefits that Canadians receive, such as health care. If you qualify, you can also apply for Canadian Citizenship. Permanent residents, however, cannot vote or work in certain occupations that require high-level security clearance.

In order to maintain your permanent residence status you must live in Canada for at least two years in a five-year period. If you do not meet the residence requirements or are convicted of a serious criminal offence, you may lose your permanent resident status.
